The Challenge

The Challenge

The Museum of Science operates a large and energy-intensive facility with extensive exhibition spaces, offices, event areas, and visitor services. The scale of the site's decarbonization challenge exceeds the scope of a single retrofit project, requiring a strategic approach to identify the most impactful interventions. BCF therefore focused on high-energy HVAC systems while supporting the development of a long-term energy reduction and carbon net-zero plan.

Why this building

The Museum of Science reaches a vast public audience and plays an important role in making science accessible to diverse communities. While the site's overall decarbonization challenge is substantial, it offers exceptional leverage: successful interventions can reduce emissions in a highly visible public institution while demonstrating practical pathways for large cultural buildings. Through the project, BCF also supports the creation of a long-term decarbonization roadmap that can guide future investments and inspire similar institutions.

Frictions encountered

The project reduces operational energy use and creates a roadmap for long-term decarbonization while improving comfort for staff and visitors. As a highly visible public institution, the museum can inspire and inform similar cultural organizations seeking ambitious climate action.

Measures planned/ implemented

  • HVAC controls optimization.

  • Occupancy-based HVAC controls.

  • Variable-volume multi-zone system improvements.

  • DDC upgrades for perimeter radiators.

  • Energy modelling and benchmarking.

  • Development of a comprehensive energy reduction and carbon net-zero plan.

Co-benefits

The project reduces operational energy use and creates a roadmap for long-term decarbonization while improving comfort for staff and visitors. As a highly visible public institution, the museum can inspire and inform similar cultural organizations seeking ambitious climate action.

„As a science museum, we have a responsibility not only to educate visitors about climate solutions, but also to put them into practice. Our partnership with the Belimo Climate Foundation is helping us reduce energy use and carbon emissions while showing what’s possible in an existing building. Open to the public every day, the Museum of Science serves as a living case study for making buildings more efficient, sustainable, and resilient.“
